Caño Negro Birding Tours

A Sanctuary of Biodiversity

Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge stands as the largest wetland in Costa Rica, recognized internationally for its critical importance to migratory birds. The refuge spans an impressive landscape, comprising marshes, lagoons, and floodplains that provide a fertile ground for the rich tapestry of life within.

For those drawn to the world of avian wonders, Caño Negro is nothing short of paradise. The wetland's pristine environment serves as the perfect backdrop for birdwatching, offering glimpses of some of the most sought-after species in Central America.

Tour Information

For our Caño Negro tours, we usually leave Bijagua early to get to the boat launch at 6:00 am. Early morning birding is best, as Caño Negro is nearly at sea level and it gets hot in the middle of the day in the Caribbean lowlands.

Our boat tours here are with an excellent guide/pilot, and we're usually done around 11 am.

Jabiru

These large storks were threatened with extinction not too long ago, but their status is better now. They're widespread, but not very common. Caño Negro is one of the most consistent place to see these amazing birds in Costa Rica.

Roseate Spoonbill

These large, charismatic birds are in the ibis family and they're a common resident here in the wetlands of Caño Negro.

American Pygmy Kingfisher

These tiny kingfishers are one of the gems of Caño Negro. These are common kingfishers and they're very comfortable being close to humans (compared to other kingfishers).

Boat-billed Heron

These amazing herons can be a bit more challenging to see compared to other herons, as these are nocturnal and they like to stay hidden during the day.

But the boat trips that we organize travel through the canals that these birds use for their day roosts and it's one of the best places in Costa Rica to see these birds.

Black-necked Stilt

These delicate shorebirds are fun to watch as they forage along the edge of the lagoon.

Nicaraguan Grackle

These birds are endemic to the border of Nicaragua and Costa Rica, and Caño Negro is one of the easiest places to see them.

Little Blue Heron

These small herons are spectacular birds, with lovely coloration. They're less timid around humans than other herons and they offer plenty of close photo opportunities.

Other Activities

While birdwatching stands out as the premier activity at Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, the area offers much more for nature lovers. Visitors can explore the wetlands through guided boat tours, providing an intimate look at the complex ecosystems and the wildlife that thrives within. Kayaking and fishing are also popular, offering a peaceful way to connect with the natural world.

For wildlife photographers, Caño Negro presents endless opportunities to capture the essence of Costa Rica's wildlife. The diverse landscapes and abundant birdlife create a dynamic environment where every moment offers the potential for the perfect shot.
